Some schools workshops...

Flags and Bunting

This very popular project has run at a number of schools including Crickhowell Primary, Llanfihangel Crucorney Primary, The Gaer, Newport and Clehonger, Herefordshire. Children make ‘Umbel Umbel’ or ‘Dragon’s Tail’ Flags (originating from Indonesia) producing a wonderful permanent resource for school events and celebrations that is easily stored and assembled (the flags are on telescopic poles). They make sets of bunting at the same time, which help trial their flag designs and are an additional resource for the school. The design drawings can also be offered to the school on a CD rom for future use.

Mini Bugs and Beasts

Glyncoed Infants School, Ebbw Vale

Children were given a small transparent pot to take home and asked to bring in their own mini bug or beast. Detailed observational drawing of their creatures was followed by ‘making’ sessions using recycled materials, clay and paint. The resulting work was stunning and was mounted for permanent Main Hall display in the style of Victorian Collector’s Box but in very large scale. An album of the designs and drawings was also created.

Take One Picture

Garway Primary, Herefordshire

A Creative Week was delivered by Arts Alive taking Canaletto’s ‘StoneMason’s Yard’ as its theme. Every pupil was involved in a diverse range of activities, including field visits to Hereford to study and make detailed drawings of windows and doors story-writing, ‘stone masonry’ using blocks of thermalite, building a giant willow bird ………At the end of the week parents were invited in to participate and visit the work. The school published a booklet about the event.

Procession Workshops

Crickhowell Cluster schools, Cwmbran, Pontypool

Arts Alive has run a variety of short half day ‘tasters’ to encourage participation in local processions and events both close to home and further afield to make processional costumes and props. Our workshops can include a visit by our own Dragon puppet to School assembly to talk to pupils about creativity ……..

History Timeline

Harold Road Junior School, Abergavenny

Artist Lisa Hellier worked with small groups of children in a variety of media to create a ‘walk through history’ for a corridor in the school depicting life in Abergavenny through the ages. The project included the pupil’s own version of the Bayeux tapestry and air balloons.

A History of Transport

Llangynidr Primary School, Powys

A textile project creating a stitched textile for permanent display in the school hall that depicts transport through the ages.

Gwent Outdoors Centres

Arts Alive has worked regularly at these local centres with groups of teenagers, often those who are disengaged from school work. Workshops have included large scale painting, 3D Sculpture, map-making and drumming.
